Community Leaders Can Learn About Water

01/21/2002

In February, future community leaders have an opportunity to participate in a new program called the Southern Arizona Water Leadership Workshop. This free program is designed to provide participants with a general understanding of the importance of water resource planning and management in Pima County.

The 3-session workshop, offered by Central Arizona Project, will be held on February 20, 27 and March 7 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Four Points by Sheraton Tucson on the southeast corner of Campbell and Speedway. All three sessions are open to the public and there is no charge.

Participants will:

§ Meet others interested in managing and preserving water resources in the Tucson area, hear an overview of water supply issues and organizations in Pima County, engage in dialogue with local CAP Board members and learn about CAP’s history and mission.

§ Hear a summary of local and state water law and learn how CAP operates within that framework.

§ Learn how CAP is managing water policy and identifying current and future issues facing the state.

§ Attend the CAWCD Board meeting on March 7 in Oro Valley.

CAP is a 336-mile-long system that brings about 1.5 million acre-feet of Colorado River water to its customers -- cities, businesses, agriculture and Indian communities -- in Pima, Pinal and Maricopa counties. An acre-foot of water is about 326,000 gallons.

To register for the sessions, or for more information about the program, go to CAP’s website at www.cap-az.com and click on Leadership Workshop, or contact Crystal Thompson at 888-891-5795.
