As part of CAP’s Know Your Water series, you will be meeting some of the employees who work each day to ensure Colorado River water flows through our 336-mile aqueduct to reach our municipal, agricultural, industrial and tribal customers.
Today, learn more about Matt Nash from Headquarters Maintenance via his words and by watching his video.
Q: In a nutshell, what do you do for CAP?
A: I do general maintenance, construction, landscaping, plumbing, and pretty much anything else that needs to be done.
Q: How did you get into this line of work?
A: I originally worked in the Warehouse, but was asked to fill in for Headquarters Maintenance’s maintenance worker when he was on loan to pumping plants. I really liked the variety and pace of the Headquarters Maintenance position, so when it became open, I applied for it and was selected.
Q: How does the work you do on a daily basis affect our water supply?
A: Although I don’t directly work on the CAP canal, the Headquarters Maintenance Department is part of the puzzle that helps keep the water flowing. From creating the workspace for the Water Control Department to making sure the lights are on, it’s all important to ensure we can all do our part to keep CAP operating, and the water flowing. We are a part of team CAP.
Q: What are some of the technical advances that allow you to do your job more effectively and efficiently?
A: The computer has definitely made an impact. It allows me to look up and troubleshoot any problems that I might be having on a project. I can find the issue, find the proper replacement part, pick it up or order it and have it delivered to me within a few days.
Q: What's the most challenging part of your work?
A: I think that learning a new skill is the most challenging. Of course, I want to learn how to do something new, but I’m critical and want to ensure the job turns out well. But that’s how you learn.
Q: What's the most gratifying part of your job?
A: Completing a project is gratifying; watching something come from nothing. I also enjoy the smiles on our customers’ faces after a project is completed just as they envisioned it.
Q: What is your favorite part about working at CAP?
A: I like working for an employer that actually cares about its employees. You don’t feel expendable, which creates great morale and makes us all happier employees.
