CAP joined other key water stakeholders seeking basin analysis

Phoenix, AZ. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation announced it would help fund a locally-proposed study of the Eloy and Maricopa-Stanfield groundwater basins between Phoenix and Tucson. The study will help local areas identify future supply and demand imbalances, and to explore potential mitigation opportunities.

Pinal Partnership led the proposal effort with support from Central Arizona Project, Arizona Department of Water Resources, Pinal County, Pinal County Water Augmentation Authority, Global Water Resources, Arizona Water Company, City of Casa Grande, City of Eloy, and Maricopa Stanfield Irrigation & Drainage District

“Being chosen by Reclamation demonstrates the power of diverse Arizona water stakeholders joining together and working towards a common goal,” said Suzanne Ticknor, CAP Water Policy Director. “We hope this collaborative effort can be leveraged for future studies and infrastructure projects in Arizona.”

The study area is important to CAP because it encompasses some of the organization’s largest customers. The basins also provide aquifer storage of CAP-delivered water to help increase regional supply reliability. CAP plans to contribute modeling tools to the basin study effort to help with supply and demand analysis.

The Basin Study Program is part of WaterSMART. WaterSMART is the Department of the Interior's sustainable water initiative that uses the best available science to improve water conservation and help water resource managers identify strategies to narrow the gap between supply and demand. Central Arizona Project (CAP) is Arizona's single largest resource for renewable water supplies. CAP is designed to bring roughly 1.5 million acre-feet of water from the Colorado River to Central and Southern Arizona every year. More than 80% of the state's population, live in Maricopa, Pima and Pinal counties, where CAP water is delivered. It is a 336-mile long system of aqueducts, tunnels, pumping plants and pipelines.
