Temporary Water Use
The Colorado River Basin continues to experience drought and the impacts of hotter and drier conditions. Based on the Jan. 1, 2024, projected level of Lake Mead, the U.S. Secretary of the Interior has declared a Tier 1 shortage for Colorado River operations. This Tier 1 shortage has resulted in another substantial cut to Arizona’s share of the Colorado River. Nearly all the reductions within Arizona have been borne by Central Arizona Project (CAP) water users, including CAP’s Temporary Water Program. Effective Dec. 31, 2021, CAP’s Temporary Water Program was terminated.
