Adaptation

CAP is working on local and regional partnerships to adapt to the changing climate, finding innovative ways to conserve and preserve our water supplies such as storing water in Brock Reservoir and investing in irrigation efficiency projects.

Brock Reservoir

Brock Reservoir

Each year, about six million acre-feet of Colorado River water is regulated at Imperial Diversion Dam, just north of Yuma, Ariz., for irrigation and other uses in California, Arizona and Mexico. That water must be released from storage in Lake Mead, nearly 300 miles to the north. It takes about five days for water released from Lake Mead to reach Imperial Dam.

By the time the water arrives at Imperial Dam, the water users that scheduled the water delivery may be unable to take it due to factors that limit those water users’ ability to utilize the water (such as the occurrence of precipitation during those five days for agricultural water users). In order to address this requested water that otherwise would be lost to the system, the Bureau of Reclamation coordinated the construction of Brock Reservoir – a man-made reservoir with a total combined capacity of 7,945 acre-feet.

The project was partially funded by Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA), and Metropolitan Water District (MWD) of Southern California – each with an equal contribution of $28.6 million. As part of its contribution, SNWA can use 400,000 acre-feet of Intentionally Created Surplus (ICS) water credits over 20 years, while CAP and MWD can each use 100,000 acre-feet of ICS water credits.

Irrigation Efficiency

Between 2019 and 2024, CAP developed several pilot-scale studies looking at irrigation efficiency efforts. These studies involved testing efficacy of gravity-driven irrigation technology on a variety of Arizona crops including citrus, sorghum, cotton, guayule, onion, artichoke and alfalfa.

Results proved the ability to sustain or even improve crop yield using far less water (33-82% less, depending on crop). CAP has partnered with several agricultural districts and tribal entities to share this information as a way to continue farming efforts using less water.
